Alleged Sale of Public Assets: Mwanakatwe to clarify

Finance Minister Margaret Mwanakatwe is expected to issue a public Statement over the alleged Misrepresenting statements in circulation concerning state Assets/liabilities.

These include the Zambia’s main electricity Supplier ZESCO, the National Broadcaster, Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC)and the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA).

This follows unconfirmed reports indicating that the named State Assets have been sold to a named country by the Zambian Government as a means of repaying the debt that the named country is owed.

In a brief statement issued by the ministry of Finance Public Relations Unit, the minister is compelled to respond in line with the Laws of Zambia under CAP 349.

The Ministry said last month in another statement that Zambia’s public external debt stood at US$9.37 billion representing 34.2% of GDP against a threshold of 40%.

Further, today’s statement says that the finance Media and Public Relations office says the Ministry of Finance has observed with concern, some statements making rounds aimed at misrepresenting facts concerning the state assets/liabilities.

It says the public, development partners, and the international investor community will be communicated to through the media, at a time to be advised to media houses.
