Public Accounts Committee hails PFMA

The Public Accounts Committee says Public Financial Management Act No. 1 of 2018 will help enhance accountability as it give the Public accounts committee the mandate to hold controlling officers accountable on how they discharge their responsibilities.
The committee also says citizens are the primary stakeholders in ensuring an effective system of accountability in a country.
Committee Vice Chairperson Brenda Tambatamba notes that there has been an increase in the demand for accountability by members of the public from public servants at all levels.
Ms. Tambatamba says holding public servants accountable is appealing as it accords members of the public with an opportunity to facilitate for corrections in the mismanagement of in public affairs.
She was speaking at an Economics Association Public discussion on the Importance of Public Accountability: insights and Challenges-the case of the 2018 Auditor General’s Report.
Ms. Tambatamba was speaking about the Relevance and insights of Public Accountability.
Speaking at the same meeting, Civil Society for Poverty Reduction Executive Director Patrick Nshindano says there is need to invest in public Finance Management Systems to avoid escalating matters of illegality after they happen.
He has questioned what administrative systems are there to ensure that accountability starts from service delivery points.
Mr. Nshindano was speaking on the Measures in ensuring public accountability in Zambia.
