Govt cautions against smuggling of mealie meal into DRC

Government has cautioned mealie meal traders in Mufulira on the Copperbelt to stop smuggling mealie meal into the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture Julius Shawa says the continued smuggling of mealie meal into Congo is what is resulting into the high prices of the commodity in the border town of Mufulira.
He says government is aware that some traders have continued to export mealie to numbering countries despite some administrative measures being in place.
Mr Shawa adds that government has tasked security officers to at the entry posts to ensure that mealie meal is not smuggled in to the DRC.
Mealie Meal prices in the bordering town of Mufulira on the Copperbelt province are selling between K95 to K100 per 25kg of breakfast bag.
