Kitwe Mayor concerned with operations at Black Mountain

Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kang’ombe says the Kitwe City Council is concerned with non-adherence by small scale miners operating at the Black Mountain in Kitwe.
Our Copperbelt Staffer Alick Nyankata reports that speaking during a review meeting with Chapamo Minerals Processing Ltd officials and residents of Kitwe, Mr. Kang’ombe says previously, it was agreed that the miners address issues such as spillage of slug on roads, covering the trucks with tents, transporting methods among other issues.
Mr. Kang’ombe says the local authority is concerned because the public has continued to express concern with the operations at the Black Mountain.
“After the accident, operations resumed at the mountain but that there was no compliance with the agreed guidelines on transportation,
And Chapamo Minerals Processing Ltd operating at the Black Mountain in Kitwe have pledged to prevent spillage of slug on roads after mining copper.
Operations Manager Hebban Chibale says this is because as the small scale miners continue to work on the mountain, they do not want to be receiving complaints from the general public on its operations.
Mr. Chibale says they also want to make sure that they cover trucks carrying slugs with tents.
On the aspect of coming up with a weighbridge to weigh the tonnage of trucks carrying copper slugs, Mr. Chibale says that is an expensive undertaking that needs time and resources.
And a Senior Citizen in Kitwe Philip Ngoma says in as much as the government has empowered the youths with such kind of jobs, they should ensure that they do not destroy the road infrastructure.
Meanwhile, in a statement after the meeting the Directors of Chapamo Mineral Processors Limited said it takes with great exception and contempt the manner in which local leaders from Kitwe have chosen to address matters concerning operations of the company at The Black Mountain and within the City of Kitwe.
“We observed that the meeting was addressing Mine Safety as well as safe mining activities on the mountain, a matter which the council has no jurisdiction. That is the preserve of the Mines Safety Department whom we are constantly consulting and cooperating with on a regular basis regarding our mining activities. To our surprise, we had no knowledge of any indiscretions or shortcomings regarding our current operations as raised by the council,” said the company.
“On the spillage on the roads and the movement of trucks through the C.B.D, we are aware of this matter and we have taken measures such as employing sweepers to clean the affected areas. We have also held several meetings with the Police who have been authorized to detain and impound any trucks caught contravening.”
Chapamo has also highlighted that these trucks have been contracted by the buyers of the material and as such, they do not have ultimate authority over them.
“On the damaged houses, we recently received a B.O.Q of the assessments which did not tally with our contractor’s assessment and quotation. We are, however, in the process of concluding our offer for submission in the next few days in which our contractor will attend to repairing all damaged property. We would further like to highlight that the funds for the project have been secured. However, we strongly believe that this matter should not be addressed through a public forum but a scheduled meeting with the contractor, the property owner, Chapamo representatives and the Council,” Chapamo Directors have said
