The Central Statistical office CSO says the total Index of Industrial Production (IIP) in the first three quarters of 2018 has shown an increase of 6.0 percent compared to the first three quarters of 2017.
CSO Acting Director for Census and Statistics Goodson Sinyenga says the increase is mainly attributed to significant growths recorded in Mining and quarrying and electricity Generation Industries.
He says the Mining and quarrying industry recorded recorded an increase of 7.4 percent in the period under review compared to a negative growth of 0.2 percent recorded in the first three quarters of 2017.
Mr. Sinyenga adds that Electricity generation and distribution output has shown a 12.2 percent increase in the period January to September 2018 compared to an increase of 26.3 percent in the same period of 2017.
“The Stone quarrying industry went up marginally by 1.5 percent in the first three quarters of 2018 compared to 1.4 percent recorded in the same period of 2017. This is owing to increased production of building sand and crushed stones.” Says the Director.
He explains that “The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) reflects the change of the volume of goods and/or services produced over time. It is an important short-term economic indicator in official statistics.”
