Underutilized mine licenses irks miners

The Mine Workers Union of Zambia has called government to compel investors in the mining sector with underutilized licenses to start operations as soon as possible.
The union is of the view that these underutilized mining licenses are sitting on the much needed jobs in the sector.
Union President Joseph Chewe tells Money FM News from Kitwe via telephone that Zambia still needs more investment in the mining sector in order to create more jobs and reduce poverty levels in the country.
Mr. Chewe says it is unfortunate that as the sector is recording job losses, there are some investors with mining rights that are underutilized.
He says if these investors do not want to start operations, the government should revoke these mining rights and give them to serious investors willing to start operations.
Mr. Chewe believes that if these mining rights are utilized, Zambia will be able to create more jobs in the mining sector thereby increase economic activities in the country.
