Mine Contractors, Suppliers hail mines

The Association of Mine Contractors and Suppliers has hailed the mines for their resolve to dialogue with government over new tax system as opposed to issuing threats of job cuts.
Association President Augustine Mubanga has told Money FM News via telephone from the Copperbelt that the association was concerned that the mines resorted to cut down on capital expenditure as well as job cuts as a result of changes made to the tax system.
Mr. Mubanga says the association is pleased that the mines have embraced dialogue with the state over their concerns as opposed to their earlier threats.
“The mines should understand that the people of Zambia are like landlords and they (mines) are the tenants. So the people of Zambia have to decide what they want with their minerals and the mines have no bargaining power,” he said.
Mopani Copper Mines, First Quantum Minerals Limited, Luanshya Copper Mines and Konkola Copper Mines have said they will not lay off workers as a result of the new tax system instead they will engage the government through the dialogue process.
