Aquaculture critical for economic development- Shamulege

Government says it has identified aquaculture as of critical importance to the economic development of the country as well as job creation.
Speaking at the official closing of the 2019 Aquaculture Sector Discussion Forum in Siavonga Fisheries and Livestock Permanent Secretary Dr David Shamulege says in order for the country to benefit from aquaculture there is need for industry policy makers as well as cooperating partners to work together.
Dr Shamulenge says government is aware of the high cost of production in aquaculture business in the country.
He says government will therefore strive to woo investors along the aquaculture value chain in order to enhance competition in the sector.
He says competition in the sector is likely to reduce the prices of both inputs and output in the country.
He says in an effort to promote standards and food safety the government has created fisheries and livestock inspectorate unit that will among other functions enforce adherence to bio safety standards in the country.
And Aquaculture Development Association of Zambia -ADAZ Chairperson Fisho Mwale says the association will endeavor to develop the sector to become a net exporter of fish.
Mr Mwales adds that the association will also ensure that it promotes positive facilitative growth through various consultations.
