Zambians advised to invest in Solar Energy

An Energy Expert has encouraged Zambians to personally invest in solar energy to be energy independent.
Chiko Mudenda has told Money FM News that the dry spells should act as an eye opener to the people of Zambia and invest in solar energy at the household level.
Mr. Mudenda says there is need for people to change the mindset and stop the over-dependency on hydro energy which may not reliable as a result of the current dry spells.
He has advised that the people can save for about two years and buy solar equipment and become energy independent.
He notes that the population in Zambia is growing rapidly and it is becoming a challenge for power utility company Zesco to meet the demand and hence the need for people to invest in solar energy.
ZESCO Ltd recently said Zambia and Zimbabwe reduced power generation to around half capacity at their power stations at the Kariba Dam as water levels in the reservoir fell.
According to Reuters, ZESCO Spokesperson Henry Kapata said power generation on both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides had been restricted to 500 megawatts each from total capacities of around 1,000 Megawatts.
