The Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has wondered why farmers should be the ones to face misery in the agriculture value chain.
ZNFU President Jervis Zimba has questioned why the farmer suffers when preparing the fields, when nurturing the crop, when harvesting and even when selling the crop.
Mr. Zimba has called for an end to this and has encouraged farmers to bargain for a good price for their produce and reject “peanuts”.
He observed that the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) bought the maize cheaply from farmers at K75 for a 50kg bag of maize, but has been selling at K111, saying he has been vindicated that the Agency is reaping off farmers.
He has called on the FRA to pay farmers well and pay them on time.
