Energy Expert advises ZESCO to re-activate tariff application

An Energy Expert has advised that ZESCO should re-activate the Tariff Application to the Energy Regulation Board in part or amended following the announced commencement of load shedding by the power utility Company.
Energy Forum Zambia Chairperson Johnstone Chikwanda says increased tariffs should allow the company to procure more electricity from Independent Power Producers (IPPs) or import from the region.
Mr. Chikwanda Explains that ZESCO’s 90% dependence on hydro Electricity places the country in a vulnerable situation in view of Climate variability.
He says “I wish to encourage Zesco to consider engaging government and the ERB once again with a view to re-activating the tariff application whether in totality or in form of an amended version to procure more electricity from Independent Power Producers (IPPs) or import from the region.”
This comes following a notice reportedly by ZESCO informing the public of the commencement of load shedding due to lower water levels in Lake Kariba and Kafue basin
