The Citizens Environmental and Social Concern has expressed disappointment with some traditional leaders that are calling for mining activities to be allowed in the lower Zambezi National Park.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM radio Citizens Environmental and Social Concern Executive Director Conwell Hakapya said it is unfortunate that the traditional leaders are choosing to sacrifice a little for the present at the expense of the future generation to come.
“We are quite disappointed to hear that some traditional leaders are pushing to hav a mine in the national park that is choosing to sacrifice a little for the present at the expense of the future generation to come’’ Mr Hakapaya said.
He said the traditional leaders need to understand that mining activities that they are calling will not provide the much need employment compared to what tourism is currently providing now.
“We cannot compare even to the amount of employment that the mine will provide, to what the tourism industry is providing right now” He noted.
The Luangwa Establishment has backed calls for mining to proceed in the Lower Zambezi National Park.
Establishment Chairperson Joseph Felemenga said the people of Luangwa feel it is justified to go ahead with mining in the area because of animal-human conflict as well as the high poverty levels.
