A consortium of research and health advocacy Non-Governmental
organization has urged government to accelerate the process of enacting
comprehensive tobacco control legislation and ensure its implementation
and enforcement.
Zambia Tobacco Control Consortium Chairman Professor Fastone Goma says
approximately 5700 deaths occur due to tobacco use annually in Zambia.
Professor Goma has noted the need to stop such deaths by implementing
evidence-based measures as prescribed in the World Health Organization
(WHO) framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).
He has also called members of the public to protect them from ill health by supporting tobacco control policies.
Finance Minister Bwalya Ngandu noted the need for Zambia to recognize
the international concerns about the health risks of tobacco use at the
launch of the new British American Tobacco (BAT) factory in Lusaka last
Friday.
