Sim card verification exercise continues

A State owned telecommunication Company says it has not deactivated any sim cards following the March 31st deadline in which mobile subscribers were supposed to have their information verified.
Zamtel Public Relations Officer Changwe Kabwe told Money FM News in an interview that this is because the Company has not yet received any instructions from the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) to deactivate unverified sim cards.
As at today, we have not deactivated any sim cards. The March 31st directive from ZICTA was of course complied with, but as we speak today, we have not received any instructions from the regulator to deactivate,” Mr. Kabwe said.
Mr. Kabwe further said the free verification exercise has since continued and mobile subscribers will be advised of any changes once the regulator gives further directives.
“We still continue verifying our customers’ information and if there are any fresh instructions that will come from the regulator, we will then follow suit. You may wish to know that it is an industry wide exercise, so we are waiting for further instructions,” he stated.
The verification of customer details is being done in accordance with the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) regulations to prevent mobile fraud.
