Lusaka City Council (LCC) has disclosed that the contractor engaged by the Ministry of Local Government for the construction and upgrading of various roads and junctions in Lusaka is expected to plant 2, 211 trees along all the roads under the project.
Council Public Relations Manager George Sichimba said as part of the project, AFCONS Infrastructure Limited has resumed construction works along Great East from Kabwe Roundabout to Palm Drive, Independence Avenue from Kafue Roundabout to High Court and Haile Selassie roads.
“The works commenced on 3rd June, 2020 and estimated to be completed on 31st December, 2020. Independence Avenue and Great East Roads will be expanded into six lanes while Haile Selassie road will be expanded into a dual carriageway,” Mr. Sichimba said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Sichimba said the Council anticipates that a number of trees along the three roads will be uprooted due to the massive expansion project and existing street lights will also be affected but that new ones will be installed as part of the contract.
He appealed for understanding from members of public who are emotionally attached to the trees along the said roads as the project is very important.
“The Council is well aware that some residents, especially those who have lived in Lusaka for a long time, are emotionally attached to the trees along the roads of Lusaka and they are likely to be emotionally affected.”
“The Local Authority is therefore appealing for understanding from members of public as the project is very important. Planting of trees will be done with the guidance from LCC,” he said.
