The Governance, Elections, Advocacy Research Services (GEARS) Initiative has challenged the public who feel their democratic right to freedom of speech is being infringed to freely apply to the constitutional court in a bid to ensure they are heard.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, GEARS Initiative Executive Director McDonald Chipenzi explained that people need to freely express themselves on matters of national interest without fear of being threatened because this is the reason for which the constitutional court exists.
“If people feel their right to Freedom of expression is being infringed on social media, they have the right to report to the constitutional court and ensure they are heard,” he said.
Mr. Chipenzi added that the challenge is that most people in the Country only want to complain on social media instead of taking legal action which is their civil right as citizens of the country.
“The problem with Zambians is that we like to complain instead of taking legal action,” he concluded.
Mr. Chipenzi’s comment comes in following complaints from the public regarding threats from some government officials on social media towards people’s criticize on issues of national interest.
