Minister launches first ever ‘Meet the Farmers’online summit

Minister of Agriculture says the forthcoming ‘Meet the Farmers’online Exhibition summit will give farmers an opportunity to gain information on current trends and technologies that are being practiced in the agriculture sector.

Officiating at the launch of the first ever virtual summit in Lusaka, Michael Katambo said the conference will also link farmers and various input suppliers in Zambia and the region because it will attract participation from other countries in the region such as Uganda, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and South Africa.

Mr. Katambo said the summit is an innovative online conference designed to bring farmers and other agricultural value chain players on virtual platform and has been appropriately themed as “Innovation, Agriculture future.”

He added that the conference is aimed at giving farmers the opportunity to exchange knowledge because the understanding of modern agriculture practices and technologies is vital to boosting production and productivity.

“I am very happy to announce that the ‘Meet the Farmers’ summit is an innovative online conference designed to bring farmers and other agricultural value chain players on virtual platform.”

“Further I am happy to announce that the summit will link farmers and various input suppliers in Zambia and the region whilst giving farmers an opportunity to gain information on current trends and technologies that are being practiced in the agriculture sector,” Mr. Katambo stated.

Mr. Katambo further assured the organizers of the summit of government’s support further urging them to put in place a mechanism to support and encourage full participation from all the farmers in the country.

“You may wish to know that the summit has been appropriately themed as Innovation, Agriculture future. As government, we would like to assure the organizing team of our support and we are available to help you in ensuring that this innovative platform brings a number of players in the agricultural sector in one place,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Katambo said government is fully aware and appreciates the negative impact that the cancellation of the Agricultural Commercial show will have on the farming community.

He was however optimistic that online events such as the upcoming meet the farmer summit will help fill the gap created by the cancellation of commercial shows this year.

“I am sure you are all aware by now, this year’s Agriculture Commercial Show will not take place and also ensure that all appropriate measures that have been put in place because of the Covid-19 pandemic the agriculture show was being canceled.”

“We are fully aware and appreciate the negative impact that the cancellation of the Agricultural show will have on the farming community. However we are practically pleased and optimistic that online events such as the upcoming meet the farmer summit will help fill the void created by the cancellation of these shows in 2020,” the Minister added. The ‘Meet the Farmer’ online summit is scheduled to take place from 25th to 27th August, 2020.
