GEARS hails adjournment of Parliament

Governance, Elections, Advocacy, and Research Services (GEARS) Initiative Zambia has hailed the National Assembly’s decision to adjourn Parliament Sine die due to rising COVID-19 cases is a step in the right direction.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Organization Executive Director McDonald Chipenzi said GEARS welcomes the development which is aimed at saving lives following fatal attacks from Coronavirus on members of parliament and staff.
“We welcome the development that is unfolding at the national assembly, where parliament has to adjourn Sine die following the fatal attacks from Coronavirus on members of parliament and the staff.”
“This is for the sake of saving lives not only for members of parliament and staff but also their families, friends of their families and people in the constituencies where they come from,” Mr. Chipenzi said.
Mr. Chipenzi hoped that during the indefinite closure parliament, new measures and alternatives on how to transact business will be devised for the sake of progress.
“It is a good decision that the National Assembly has taken, so we welcome it with both hands, and we hope that during this period when parliament will be closed, new measures and alternatives on how to transact business will be devised for the sake of progress,” he added.
Yesterday, Parliament adjourned sine die due to the coronavirus pandemic which has affected the National Assembly.
Vice President Inonge Wina moved a motion in Parliament of adjournment which is in accordance with parliamentary standing orders 33(1) of 2016 which calls for the adjournment of the house when a crisis arises.
