Zambia’s current power generation stands at 1, 846 MW

Energy Minister says the country’s current average power generation is 1,846 megawatts.

Speaking during a joint media briefing hosted by Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Dora Siliya, Mathew Nkhuwa stated that of the 1, 846 megawatts, 1,413 megawatts is from Zesco while 424 megawatts is from Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

Mr. Nkhuwa added that the dam level at Kariba North Bank Power Station fell from the previous level of 480.33 meters to 480.20 meters, representing 33.2 percent of usable storage.

He said Power deficit in the country has remained at 810 megawatts; hence load shedding for up to 10 hours is scheduled for different customer categories under distribution.

“Currently, we are at average power generation of about 1,846 megawatts which is comprised of 1,413 megawatts from Zesco and 424 megawatts from Independent Power Producers or IPPs.”

“Power deficit has remained at 810 megawatts; therefore load shedding for up to 10 hours is scheduled for different customer categories under distribution. However, Energy load shedding is being applied during the peak period to maintain a balance between the available generation and demand and system losses,” Mr. Nkhuwa said.
And Mr. Nkhuwa disclosed that Zesco is implementing a number of measures in a bid to alleviate the country’s power deficit.

He said construction of 750 megawatts Kafue Gorge Lower Power Station is one of the measures being implemented.

“To mitigate the deficit, there are a number of activities that are currently being implemented by Zesco, taking into consideration the electricity Act of 2019 and the National Energy Policy of 2019 that will entail and mix with some projects under implementation.”

“Notable among projects being implemented includes the construction of 750MW Kafue Gorge Lower Power Station. This station started being constructed way back in 2016, we expect the first unit of 150MW to come into play by end of October this year and the next 150MW making it 300MW by end of December and the remaining 450MW will be completed by March, 2021,” he stated.
