Kariba Lake level steadily rising

Zambezi River Authority says the Kariba Lake Level has closed the period under review from 18th December to 31st December 2020 at 20.08% usable storage (478.38metres)

The Authority’s Latest Hydrology Data, reveals that The Kariba Lake level, which should generally be decreasing at this time of the year, has been steadily rising during the period under review due to earlier than usual rise in inflows from the immediate Kariba Lower Catchment.

The Authority says, as of 2019 the same date, the lake level stood at 8.23% usable storage (476.69metres)

Following a recent decrease in Water Levels that has affected both Zambia and Zimbabwe’s dependency on Hydro Power energy, Minister of Water development, sanitation and environmental protection Dr. Jonas Chanda hopes for good rains.
According to the Zambezi River Authority, the Kariba Lake is designed to operate between levels 475.50m and 488.50m with 0.70m freeboard for hydropower generation.
