• Tourism sector has potential for growth.
• Local tourism still unsatisfactory despite numerous tourism resources.
• Lengthen tourists stay to six days.
Policy Monitoring and Research Centre (PMRC) observes that there is immense potential for growth in the country’s Tourism sector.
Organization Executive Director Bernadette Zulu told Money FM News that the diversification effort in the sector can be achieved by integrating the country’s rich cultural heritage into tourism packages beyond traditional ceremonies and promoting domestic tourism.
Ms. Zulu said despite Zambia being endowed with numerous tourism resources and attractions, local tourism has still remained unsatisfactory.
“Infrastructure, especially roads leading to the tourist sites, needs to be prioritized, in the infrastructure projects currently being implemented in the country. This applies to all the major tourism zones.”
“With regards to foreign tourists, the aim must be to lengthen tourists stay to an average of six days from the current four days,” Ms. Zulu stated.
She said if implemented, the aforementioned prospects would promote growth in the Tourism sector and ensure increased contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
