DEC nabs Luapula farmers for cannabis cultivation

• The four are small scale farmers from Chifunabuli District.
• They have been arrested for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing over 1.5 tonnes.
• Arrangements are being made for all suspects to appear before court.

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) says four small scale farmers in Luapula Province have been arrested for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing over 1.5 tonnes.
Commission Public Relations Officer Theresa Katongo identified the suspects as 27 year old Broka Chipulu, Mwila Chintala, 46, John Sekwe 49, and Kennedy Chola 23, all from Chifunabuli District.
“The four, who are all small scale farmers from Chifunabuli District are identified as Broka Chipulu, male aged 27, found with 570 kilograms of fresh cannabis plants, Mwila Chintala, male aged 46, for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 410 kilograms, John Sekwe, male aged 49, found with 325 kilograms of fresh cannabis plants and Kennedy Chola, male aged 23 for cultivating 205 kilograms of fresh cannabis plants,” Ms. Katongo disclosed.
And Ms. Katongo revealed that the Commission arrested 7 people in Central Province for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing a total of 407 kilograms and that arrangement are being made for all suspects to appear before court.
“The Commission in Central Province has arrested Brandon Mumbwayi male aged 39, Mickley Bwatu male aged 32, Schoolman Sibusiku, male aged 32 and four (4) others for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing a total of 407 kilograms.”
“And in Western- Province the Commission has arrested Biemba Kalenga female aged 53, Chikasa Kalenga male aged 28 and Mushiba Chafwila female aged 23 for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 350 kilograms, 1.7 kilograms, and 85 kilograms respectively,” she added.
