Govt commits to recruit 395 health workers

• Epidemiology of Covid-19 has contributed to an unprecedented increase in the demands on the health workforce.

Minister of Health has disclosed that government committed to recruit 395 health care givers through the treasury Number 2 of 2021.
Addressing the media in Lusaka today, Dr. Jonas Chanda said the recruitment is part of the Covid-19 response and the health care givers will be deployed to various isolation facilities and specialized hospitals countrywide.
Dr. Chanda further disclosed that his Ministry has also employed the Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) platform in a bid to enhance the capacity of the current staff through mentorship and case management series since July last year.
“The Epidemiology of the Covid-19 pandemic has contributed to an unprecedented increase in the demands on the health workforce, and simultaneously diminished health worker supply. As the backbone of our health system, health workers are key to our response to the crisis as it unfolds.”
“The Zambian government under the guidance of His Excellency the President Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, has through the Ministry of Health committed to recruit an initial 395 health care workers through Treasury Authority No.2 of 2021 as part of the Covid-19 response. These health care workers will be distributed to various Covid-19 centres as well as specialized hospitals countrywide,” Dr. Chanda disclosed.
He thanked all the cooperating partners for their continued support in the fight against the pandemic.
“In the spirit of transparency and accountability, the Ministry of Health wishes to acknowledge the unwavering support received from our cooperating partners. In a consultative meeting held yesterday, our all-weather friend the United States of American Government through the United States Charge d’ Affaires, Mr. David Young and the US CDC pledged their further support towards the Covid-19 response. They will avail details in due course,” he said.
And the Health Minister said preliminary results of genomic sequencing data have been compiled, and that they will be crucial to inform not only the routine surveillance and disease intelligence efforts but also endeavors with regard to vaccine choices, acquisition and deployment.
Meanwhile, Dr. Chanda disclosed that Zambia has recorded 555 new Covid-19 cases, with 6 deaths in the last 24 hours.
He said the cases are out of 6, 266 tests conducted, representing 9 percent positivity rate, and marking the third consecutive day that the country has recorded single digit daily positivity.
“The new cases were reported from the following provinces; 86 Northern, 83 Copperbelt, 72 Luapula, 62 Lusaka, 61 Muchinga, 58 Central, 55 Southern, 39 North-western, 33 Eastern, and 6 Western. This brings the cumulative number of confirmed cases recorded to date to 79, 557.”
“Regrettably, we recorded 6 deaths from Lusaka 3, Copperbelt 2, and North-western 1. The cumulative number of Covid-19 related deaths recorded to date now stands at 1, 104. The deaths are classified as 603 Covid deaths and 501 Covid-19 associated deaths,” he explained.
Dr. Chanda revealed that currently, the country has 2, 890 active cases out of which 2, 658 are under community management, while 232 are admitted to various isolation facilities.
