Livestock Union urges Poultry farmers to take extra care of chickens

• This is a period where there is a drastic drop in the production of eggs

Zambia Livestock Cooperative Union has advised Poultry farmers to put in extra effort in running their businesses so as to prevent losses at the end of the breeding period.
Union Director Elias Nkhuwa told Money FM News in an interview that the onset of the rainy season is just as bad as the cold season because it poses a challenge in the poultry business due to the outbreak of various poultry related diseases.
Mr. Nkhuwa added that there is usually a drastic drop in the production of eggs during the rainy season, thereby reducing supply on the market.
“During this rainy season a lot of things normally occur because you will find that the chickens are usually vulnerable to diseases and I think what is more cardinal is how to take care of the birds because during this period, you will need extra care as this is the time when you have most of the diseases outbreak,” Mr. Nkhuwa explained.
He further urged poultry farmers to put in place proper chicken runs for their birds while ensuring that feeding is done on a consistent basis to contain challenges that come with the rainy season.
“It is just like the cold season which also comes with a challenge, you will need proper shelter and feeding must be done in a consistent way to keep the chickens healthy because if you mess up on anything, you will find that there will be maybe low production and this might lead to a low egg production.”
