• Zambia should look at the ranking as a stepping stone.
• Government urged to deal with the cost of production for commodity prices.
• Do not think of Buying beef, you will not get it because beef has gone above K90
Zambia Consumer Association says Zambia should look at the Business Insider Africa Rating of Zambia being ranked as the 6th most expensive country to live in due to high inflation rate as a stepping stone.
Association Executive Secretary Juba Sakala tells Money FM News in an interview that Zambia can do better if it puts things in order and look at the rating as to why the country is there on the list.
“As Zambians how do we look at it? let us think the positive part of it, we are number six not doing very fine, we can do better if we put our cards in order.” He said.
Mr. Sakala pointed out the only problem that was there has been a notable increase in most commodity prices recently with Bread selling above K15 and a 2 liter cooking oil minimum of K80 from 70 Kwacha.
He however anticipated Zambia to take a further Position in January’s Continental inflation rate with the recent rise in Commodity prices.
Mr. Sakala had also urged government to deal with the cost of production for commodity prices to reduce by giving incentives to Manufacturers, Retailers and Importers.
“We do not expect prices of basic commodities to go down if we are not dealing with the cost of production.” Mr. Sakala said.
He lamented that a K100 note has lost value from what it can purchase in most Shops.
“Right now as I tell you a K100 is nothing, you walk in any shop with K100 you will get back with a packet of Sugar and a loaf of Bread not getting other things.”
“Do not think of Buying beef, you will not get it because beef has gone above K90,” Said Mr. Sakala.
