The Center for Trade Policy and Development has advised the government that as they diversify the economy, they should consider the forestry sector that has potential to earn the country some money.
CTPD Head of Programmes Brian Mwiinga says currently, the forestry sector is contributing about 5.1 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) saying it has potential to help grow the economy.
Mr. Mwiinga is also pleased that there is some level of progress by the government when it comes to diversifying the economy and stop the over dependency on copper.
He notes that the tourism sector is receiving some attention as seen through the budgetary allocations.
“Government seems to be pumping in some reasonable amounts into the tourism sector but what is not receiving the required attention is the agriculture sector. This can be seen with the budgetary allocations as Zambia is failing to meet some targets that we have signed as a country,” he said.
Mr. Mwiinga has since recommended that the government identifies some sectors that can help in boosting the economy as the country continues to diversify the economy.
