Extended Producer Responsibility Bill is ‘progressive’ – ZEMA

The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) says the enactment of the Extended Producer Responsibility Bill is a positive step in environmental management of the country.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News in Lusaka, ZEMA Public Relations Manager Irene Chipili says the new law will be enforced alongside the Environmental Management Act Number 12 of 2011.
Ms Chipili says the effected law will also promote the recycle and reuse of materials in the country.
She says the Agency has engaged in broad stakeholders’ consultative meeting before concluding the law, to prepare them for the phase out of plastic use.
“The new law is not just focusing on plastic carrier bags but other forms of packaging such as cans and plastic bottles,” she said.
She says the new law places accountability on the manufacture to be responsible of removing waste from the environment they operate in.
She says ZEMA as a regulator will ensure that manufactures and industries affected comply with the new law.
She says the Agency will also carry out a number of sensitization program to inform the ordinary citizens about the new law.
