PPIZ urges Mines, Govt to dialogue

The Public Policy Institute of Zambia says the government should not ignore the threats coming from the Zambia Chambers of Mines of cutting down of about 21, 000 workers due to new tax regime.
Institute President Fabian Chewe tells Money FM News via telephone from Kitwe that if these jobs are cut, over 51, 000 families will be affected.
Mr. Chewe says the solution to this perceived standoff between the Ministry of Finance and Zambia Chambers of Mines is dialogue.
“We know the government wants to get revenue from the mines, but it must be a win-win situation. The key here is dialogue, let the interested parties sit down and agree on certain measures,” he said.
He says if the two parties fail to agree on certain modalities, it’s the workers who will suffer as they will remain jobless.
