Magande guides on ‘Govt, Mines standoff’

Former Finance Minister Ng’andu Magande observes need for the government to effectively engage the mines over their concerns over new tax system.
Zambia has abolished Value Added Tax (VAT) and replaced it with a non-refundable sales tax in April 2019 and has further introduced new mining duties and increase royalties.
This has prompted the mines through the Zambia Chambers of Mines to announce that they will be laying off 21, 000 workers of the workers as a result of the new tax system.
But Mr. Magande tells Money FM News that during his time as minister from 2003 to 2008, he embraced dialogue with the mines each time they were aggrieved.
Mr. Magande, who is also an Economist, says the solution to this impasse lies in meaningful dialogue between the concerned parties in this case the mines and the government.
