Luanshya Mayor says Mining Companies intending to blackmail Government over the new tax regime should emulate the path taken by Mopani Copper Mine.
In a statement made available to Money FM News Nathan Chanda has commended Mopani Copper Mines Chief Executive Officer Chris Vermeulen for assuring the Zambian Government that the mining firm will not retrench any of its workers as a result of the introduceded new tax regime for the mining sector.
Mr Chanda says the mining firm has expressed its long-term commitment to Zambia by its gesture.
He has also commended the mining firm for the efforts it is making to ensure success in its ventures.
“Mining Companies that want to blackmail the Government over the new tax regime should learn from Mopani Copper Mines at once,” He said.
Mr Chanda has since advised mining companies to desist from the tendency of arm twisting the Government and other stakeholders whenever they had grievances.
He noted that dialogue always bears better fruits than confrontation.
“Job security for our people and increased investments is what we want to hear from mining companies and all other players in the private sector,” He said.
He says he is confident that other mining companies will take a leaf from Mopani and engage the Government on any of their concerns regarding the business environment in the Country.
