Chapamo start renovating ‘blasted houses’

Chapamo Mineral Processing Limited has disclosed that works on the 123 houses that were affected by the blasting that took place last year has started.
Government in November last year directed Chapamo Mineral Resources Limited to repair 123 houses that were damaged due to mining blasting at the slag dump in Kitwe popularly known as the Black Mountain
Chapamo Mineral Processing Director Kelvin Tembo has confirmed in an interview today that works to repair houses that were damaged in the blast started on 7th January 2019.
Mr. Tembo says works are progressing well despite a few challenges with house owners.
Mr. Tembo revealed from the time works started some owners of houses are adding works that were not in bill of quantities which was made after the owners submitted reports to Chapamo.
He said it’s unfortunate that the owners are taking advantage of the situation by adding things that were not initially indicated in the report.
And Rokana ward Councilor Chanda Chilufya has assured owners of the houses that were damage to remain calm as contractors are on the ground working on the damaged houses.
Mr Chilufya said works started with houses near the black mountain as most of them where badly damaged due to the blast.
Government last year gave 10 percent of the slag dump to small scale miners under the Chapamo as empowerment for the youths on the Copperbelt and the 90 percent is owned by Nkana Alloy.
