The Ministry of Commerce Trade and Industry says Zambia’s economic outlook for 2019 is bright.
Speaking at the Zambia Economic Outlook Breakfast Event organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Zambia, Minister in charge Christopher Yaluma says Zambia’s economy is expected to grow by 4.6 percent by the end of this year.
Mr. Yaluma says the economic growth that was recorded in 2018 is mainly attributed to the positive performance of the Information and communication, Mining and quarrying industry as well as Wholesale and retail trade.
He says the ministry is currently looking forward to securing markets under the Tripartite Free Trade Area which will give Zambia an additional market of over 626 million people.
“In terms of international trade, Zambia’s exports as of November 2018 amounted to K86, 056.3 Million compared to K69, 403.0 Million recorded in 2017 over same period,” said Mr. Yaluma said.
“During the same period, Non-Traditional Exports (NTEs) amounted to K21, 416.6 Million in 2018 while in 2017 was K16, 932.4. The major export market share destination by regional groupings were Asia and SADC accounting for about 27.7% and 19.4% of Zambia’s exports respectively.”
Speaking at the same event American Chamber of Commerce President Ferdinand Zaumu says 2018 had seen a number of economic improvements among them the stability of the currency and the Eurobond yields have improved from 17 percent to 12 percent.
