Government’s plans to extend fish ban period applauded.

The Zambia Aquaculture Cooperative Society has supported government’s plans to extend the fishing ban period from three to six months.


Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Society President Dr. Collins Kachaka said once actualized, the move will help the breeding and growth of fish in natural water bodies.
Dr. Kachaka observed that fish in the water bodies is depleted due to over fishing and use of wrong fishing methods.


“This move to extend the fish ban to six months is a very important move because it will allow for the breeding and growth of fish in the natural water bodies, rivers, lakes and so on,” Dr. Kachaka said.
He however said the period should be extended to a year or two to allow fish to multiply enough and the nation can be feeding on fish from ponds.


“As we know thye fish in our natural water bodies is depleted because of over fishing and the use of wrong fishing methods.Infact the period should be extended to one year or two years to allow for fish to multiply enough,” he stated.


On Tuesday, Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Nkandu Luo said government will extend the fishing ban from the current three to six months to preserve fish.
Professor Luo said this in the wake of depleting fish stocks in lakes and rivers adding that her Ministry is working on a Statutory Instrument to this effect.
