Own backyard fish ponds to increase fish production – ZACS

Zambia Aquaculture Cooperative Society has called on people in the formal sector to own fish ponds in their backyards in a quest to increase fish production and also reduce the cost of relish at household level.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Association President Dr Collins Kachaka said the organization will this year embark on a campaign to advocate for the need for every household to have a fish pond in the backyard.
Dr. Kachaka noted that owning a fish pond will enable people in the formal sector to have additional income, other than being dependent on the monthly salary.
“We shall have a campaign to focus on people in offices, because this will reduce on the cost of food especially relish and it will also create additional income other than the salary,” he said.
He stated that the advent of Covid-19 has demonstrated the importance of empowering all sectors of the economy looking at how people have lost jobs as a result of the pandemic.
“The coming in of Covid-19 has demonstrated the need for people in the formal sector to be empowered because of how people in the sector lost their jobs in 2020 when the pandemic broke out,” he explained.
