Onion price increase expected by mid-January

KEY POINTS
• Onion prices are expected to start increasing by mid-January.
• Increase would be attributed to increased demand of the commodity.
• The Association has managed to control the commodity price… selling in the range of K50 to K70

Fruit and Vegetable Association of Zambia says onion prices on the local market are expected to start increasing by mid-January 2021.
Association President Bernard Sikunyongana tells Money FM News in an interview that the anticipated increase would be attributed to increased demand of the commodity on the market as local supply from farmers will be falling short.
“As we go to 15th, 20th January the prices start shooting up because locally will have winded up,” he said.
Mr. Sikunyongana further revealed that the Association has however managed to control the commodity price on the market from 2020 selling in the range of K50 to K70 for a 10Kg bag.
“We have managed to control the prices otherwise there is no farmer who has complained of not being given good market,” Mr Sikunyongana noted.
He said onion prices have not been worse on the market since 2020.
