Cancer cases in children on the rise

• Number of cancer cases in children have risen in Zambia.

• Awareness and early detection is needed to fight the high prevalence of cancer in children.

• Campaign to be launched to raise funds for local treatment of cancer in children.

A Cancer Organization has revealed that the number of cancer cases in Children has risen in the country.

Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Zambian Cancer Society Communications Officer, Idah Phiri said it is for this reason that they should be more awareness on childhood cancers in order to ensure early detection and effective treatment.

‘‘We have noted that cancer in children is on the rise. However, despite cancer in children not being preventable, it can still be treated when detected early,’’ she said.

Ms. Phiri also noted that funds need to be set aside to support vulnerable children living with cancer get better and quality treatment in Zambia.

She further disclosed that her organization has embarked on a campaign to raise funds needed to purchase drugs needed for a CT Scan to treat cancer in Children.

‘‘As an organisation, we are about to launch a campaign to raise funds to help disadvantaged children with their medical lapses and also purchase a drug called contrast solution which is needed for a CT Scan,’’ Ms Phiri said.

‘‘Our goal is to raise K150 000 every year for 3 years, in order to help with this campaign.’’ Zambia yesterday commemorated World Cancer Day under the theme: I am and I will.
