United Truck Drivers and Allied Workers Union of Zambia has called on government to ensure that only local transporters and Zambian Logistics Companies control how roads are shared within the country.
Union President Givers Moonga told Money FM News in an interview that local transporters should also be allowed to dictate how much they would want to be paid for the loads that they carry from Zambia to other countries, unlike the current trend where foreign transporters dictate the rates.
Mr. Moonga noted that most Logistics Companies are not based in Zambia, and yet they give contracts where locals are sub-contracted, hence controlling the way Zambian roads are shared.
“The way contracts are awarded and the loads for Zambia, when they are carried here in Zambia and going to other countries they are regarded as backloads, so I think the rates need to be controlled.”
“Most of these logistics companies are not Zambia based, you find someone who is giving you contracts where you are sub-contracted is not even a Zambian and not staying in Zambia, he is very far and he is controlling the way Zambian roads are shared. Let the Zambian transporters and Zambian logistics companies control how roads are shared within the country,” Mr. Moonga stated.
He stressed the need for government to critically look into the matter.
