Chisamba Tomato processing plant on course

• The processing plant will cost about US$ 5 million in phase one.
• The contractor for the project is on site.
• The project is expected to create over 300 direct jobs and over 2,000 indirect jobs.

Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) says it has made significant progress towards establishing a tomato processing plant in Chisamba, Central Province
Responding to a press query sent by Money FM News, IDC Corporate Communication Officer Namakau Mukelabai stated that the processing plant will be set up in a phased approach and will cost about US$ 5 million, in the first phase.
Ms. Mukelabai said the project, which is expected to create over 2, 300 direct and indirect jobs has since commenced and the contractor is on site, adding that construction works are anticipated to be completed within 18 months.
“Following a directive from the Minister of Finance during the 2021 Budget presentation to establish a tomato processing plant, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) has made significant strides towards the commencement of the factory – Fig-tree Fruit Processing Limited in Chisamba,” Ms. Mukelabai said.
She expressed confidence that once completed, the factory will provide a readily available and predictable market for farmers in surrounding areas.
“The IDC is confident that the tomato processing plant which will add value to tonnes of tomatoes that go to waste every year will provide a readily available and predictable market for farmers in surrounding areas. “
“In addition, the project is expected to create over 300 direct jobs and over 2,000 indirect jobs,” she stated.
