BuyZed calls on private sector to facilitate onion preservative equipment

• They can facilitate through cooperatives preservative equipment.

BuyZed Campaign has called on the private sector to come on board and facilitate preservative equipment for onions and potatoes.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Organization Found Evans Ngoma noted that onions and potatoes are highly perishable commodities, hence they need good care.
Mr. Ngoma said farmers must be adequately equipped with drying equipment for their onion to avoid wastage.
“Onions and potatoes are highly perishable products which need extremely good care. We would like to call on organizations like Musika, World Vision, just to mention but a few to try and identify areas where production of these two commodities is prominent so that they can facilitate through cooperatives preservative equipment,” Mr. Ngoma stated.
He added that although the Organization appreciates the natural drying method through the sun, it is not sustainable enough and this in most cases results into products like onion going to waste.
Mr. Ngoma also called for the construction of cold chain facilities in most agriculture dominated areas so that potatoes can be preserved for future consumption.
“That which is coming from across the borders would have stayed in the cold chain facilities for longer than necessary and they offload it to us and the product is not fresh. So we would like to encourage each one of us to be patriotic and consume local because that is the only way we will develop our capacity and grow our own economy,” he added.
