Lusaka City Council (LCC) has disclosed that it is working on a payment plan to clear the outstanding electricity bills in various markets run by the local authority in the city.
Council Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba said the local authority has taken over the bills which should have been paid by marketeers through their associations that were collecting money meant for paying their electricity bills.
Ms. Mwamba cited Kaunda Square, Libala and Nyumba Yanga as some of the markets that are affected because of the electricity debt.
She stated that the local authority will ensure that the outstanding electricity bills for markets are settled within a shortest possible period of time.
“Lusaka City Council is alive to the fact that some marketeers have been negatively affected because of the electricity debt that accumulated before the installation of prepaid meters,” Ms. Mwamba said.
She urged market-traders to accept the new ZESCO billing system.
“Our mandate as a local authority is to ensure that traders operate in a favourable environment for their business to thrive,” she added.
