Business Developer urges COMESA to address challenges hindering SME growth

• Delegates should identify and address challenges that are hindering the growth of SMEs across the region.
• COMESA member states should note the crucial role SMEs play towards social-economic development growth.
• Delegates should also consider creating one currency in the region, as this would ease the expansion of local businesses.

A Business Developer says the ongoing Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) intergovernmental committee meeting should also address how the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) can thrive across the region.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Mathews Banda said it is important that COMESA member states note the crucial role SMEs play towards social-economic development growth.
Mr. Banda stated that delegates should identify and address challenges that are hindering the growth of SMEs across the region.
He added that delegates should also consider creating one currency in the region, as this would ease the expansion of local businesses to reach other countries within the COMESA region.
“The delegates need to identify challenges that would make one not to grow their business into another region,” Mr. Banda said.
He also advised COMESA member states to come up with a common traveling document that will ease the movement of individuals into and other countries when conducting business.
“If you have to travel out, you need a passport which sometimes is cumbersome to access, why don’t the delegates agree to use your NRC for travelling within the region,” he wondered.
