Minister of Technology and Science has disclosed that Zambia has been recognized to be among top five countries in the world that have made great progress over the last eighteen months to improve connectivity and identified as the most improved country in Sub-Saharan Africa based on the mobile connectivity score.
Felix Mutati said the recognition has been at the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) Mobile World Annual Congress 2023, with a membership of more than 750 mobile network operators and more than 400 associate members in the mobile industry ecosystem.
Mr. Mutati stated that ICT Policy, digital transformation strategy, broadband plan, Development of a roadmap for 5G spectrum, and Economic regulation, Universal Access Service, Cyber Security and other regulatory interventions undertaken by Zambia underpinned the recognition.
“Notably, Zambia has also been ranked sixth for peak On-Net calling tariffs when benchmarked against similar tariffs in eighteen countries within SADC and COMESA regions,” Mr. Mutati stated.
He added that Zambia has also been ranked fourth in pricing of monthly data bundles of 1.5 GB relative to fourteen other countries, indicating the country’s relative competitiveness with respect to affordability.
“The pro-growth policies adopted for the ICT Sector in Zambia have already started to yield positive outcomes with anticipated improvements in internet coverage and adoption,” he added.
Zambia was shortlisted among the top five countries in the world, alongside India, Jordan, Tunisia and Uzbekistan in which the overall award was won by India.
