Lusaka City Council apprehends seven traders for street vending

• The Local Authority conducted random inspections in the Central Business District.
• It was discovered that some people are still selling on the streets.
• The apprehended perpetrators have since appeared before the Fast Track Court at Lusaka City Council.

Lusaka City Council (LCC) has apprehended seven street vendors for illegally selling their merchandise and food items along Freedom way and Chachacha roads.
Council Public Relations Officer Nyambe Bulumba said in a statement that the Local Authority conducted random inspections in the Central Business District to check on compliance levels with regards to street vending, and it was discovered that some people are still selling on the streets.
Mr. Buluma reiterated that street vending is prohibited according to Statutory Instrument Number 12 of 2019.
“The apprehended perpetrators have since appeared before the Fast Track Court at Lusaka City Council. Street vending is prohibited according to Statutory Instrument Number 12 of 2019 and as such, those found vending on the streets will be liable for imprisonment of not less than three months with hard labour,” Mr. Buluma stated.
He warned vendors against going back to the streets, but instead apply for trading spaces in markets.
“We further call on members of the public to cooperate with our officers on the ground as we endeavor to bring back Lusaka to its Glory days,” he added.
