42% of 2022 REA funds to go towards Renewable Energy projects

• There is a slight increment in the allocation.
• The Authority is currently finalizing its work plan with regards to projects to undertake in 2022.
• Most of it will go for renewable energy projects maybe about 42 percent of it.

Rural Electrification Authority (REA) says 42 percent of the K362.2 million that has been allocated for Rural Electrification programs in the 2022 national budget will go towards renewable energy projects.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, Authority Corporate Affairs Manager Justin Mukosa however said the institution is still planning for programs to undertake next year.
Mr. Mukosa noted that there has been a slight increase in the REA budget for 2022 compared to K307.2 million which was allocated this year.
He added that the Authority is currently finalizing its work plan with regards to projects to undertake in 2022 based on the money that has been proposed for rural electrification programs.
“2021 Budget has K307 million for this year and we have K362 million for 2022 so there is a slight increment in the allocation. We are still in the planning stage for next year. Right now are finalizing our work plan in terms of the projects we are going to undertake next year.”
“Most of it will go for renewable energy projects maybe about 42 percent of it right now as it stands in our planning stage and that 42 percent will come to about K113 million or K114 million,” Mr. Mukosa said.
He further said REA intends to distribute about 15, 000 solar home systems across the country under the renewable energy projects.
“If we are taking about renewables, we have plans for about 15, 000 solar home systems that are supposed to be distributed across the country to which we are going to be providing a subsidy.”
And Mr. Mukosa disclosed that part of the 42 percent of the REA budget will go towards installation of a high power solar system for about 42 chief’s palaces, among other projects.
“We have a number of solar mini plants and also we will be throwing some money to what we are calling a high power solar system for Chiefs’ palaces, for about 42 Chiefs’ palaces. So this will get about 42 percent of the money that will be coming into the coffers of the Authority.”
“There are also plans to undertake about 15 kilowatts solar systems for schools and rural health centers, I can’t confirm the number for now because people are still in the planning stage. And also we have what we call collaborative projects, these are projects that we undertake with developmental organizations such as NGOCC,” he added.
Government has proposed an allocation of K362.2 million towards Rural Electrification Programs in 2022.
