Poultry industry records reduction in production

The Poultry Association of Zambia says the industry last year recorded a 4.2 reduction in the production of day-old chicks.
Association Executive Director Dominic Chanda has told Money FM News that the industry had in 2017 produced about 93 million broilers from the 80 million that was produced in 2018 indicates a 4.2 reduction in production.
Mr. Chanda says the reduction was as a result of fear by the hatcheries to put up a very huge stock because of the outbreak of an influenzas that affected southern Africa.
He adds that the layers sector last year recorded a positive increment of about 10.8 percent in egg production.
Mr. Chanda added that 36.7 million trays of eggs were produced in 2017 to about 41.6 million trays produced in 2018.
He has attributed the increase in the production of eggs to the reduction in the price of stock feeds, adding at it attracted small and medium scale poultry farmers to come back into the business.
Mr. Chanda says the export market was lucrative as the association only managed to export about 32 percent of eggs into the Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia and Angola.
