Capture fish production not likely to increase – Govt

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock says the production from capture fisheries is not likely to increase from the current average of 85, 000 metric tonnes per annum due to climate change.
Speaking at the official opening of the Aquaculture Sector Discussion Forum, under the theme ” Mitigating Disease Risk in Aquaculture Sector”, Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Kampamba Chewe says fisheries sub sector that include both aquaculture and capture fisheries is important to the economy of the country.
Mrs. Chewe says this contribute about 0.4 percent to the Agriculture sector and supports about one million people directly and indirectly.
Mrs. Chewe says government believes that it is possible for Zambia to not only meet its own fish consumption needs but also contribute to regional and international demand.
She says the country has needed water resources, land and labour, adding that its Central location gives the country the advantage to become the powerhouse in Sub-Sahara.
She says already Zambia is a number one fish producer from aquaculture in the SADC region and number five in Africa.
And speaking earlier Chairperson for the Aquaculture Development Association of Zambia Fisho Mwale says the Aquaculture sector is a rapidly growing attracting foreign investments.
