Government has noted that the country needs to take agriculture as an income generating practice in order for the country to diversify in an economically sustainable manner.
Agriculture Minister Michael Katambo says this should not only be seen as a matter under social development and food security.
He was speaking at the 2019 women in agriculture conference in Lusaka under the theme “Think equal, build smart, innovate change in agriculture”.
Speaking at the same event, Women in Agriculture Chairperson Nkolola Halwindi has called for women in agriculture to move to a mechanized way of thinking.
Ms. Halwindi, who is also Nkoka Women in Agribusiness Director, says there is need to implement agricultural technologies to move forward and ensure change in the sector.
And an organization aimed at ending hunger and poverty, Heifer International has observed that some cultural and social practices are hindrance to women’s full participation in developmental activities.
Heifer International Zambia Representative Joyce Phiri says they obstruct women from exploiting resources and opportunities for development.
Heifer International began operating in Zambia in 1988.
Since its inception, Heifer Zambia has dedicated its efforts towards the mission to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the Earth, reaching more than 40,000 rural families through gifts of living loans (livestock) and training.
