Rural communities lack access to financial services – BAZ

The Bankers Association of Zambia (BAZ) says about 50 percent of people in rural areas of the country lack access to financial services.
Speaking to Journalist in Lusaka ahead of the Financial Literacy Week, BAZ Chief Executive Officer Leonard Mwanza says about 17 financial institutions in the country have confirmed participation in this year financial literacy week.
Mr. Mwanza says this year’s financial literacy week is aimed at taking financial knowledge to rural areas where financial up take has remained low.
He says the usage of financial services has remained low in rural areas despite various digital financial revolutions in the sector.
Mr. Mwanza says this year’s financial literacy week theme “Be Money Smart, to Live a Better Life” is aimed at helping people in planning for their lives.
He says it is important for people to place on how best to achieve their set-up goals either on short- or long-term basis.
And Bank of Zambia Assistance Director for Finance sector Development Musapende Phiri says the agenda for financial inclusion can only be achieved if all people in the country play a role.
Mr Phiri has since encouraged people from various sector in the country to play a significant role in the financial education space in an effort to increase financial inclusion.
