Government, through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has begun the transportation of relief items to Malawi and Zimbabwe that were affected by cyclone Idai last month.
DMMU says this is in light of the call made by President Edgar Lungu, to offer humanitarian support to the sister countries.
DMMU Communications Officer Racheal Chama says the items which are from the government and other well-wishers, which include cooperate institutions, Churches and individuals, are worth approximately K7 million.
Ms Chama says the items include mealie meal, medical supplies, second hand clothes, dignity kits, kitchen sets, mattresses, hand sanitisers, disinfectants and cash among other things.

“The relief items destined for Malawi will be officially handed over to the Government on Thursday by the Minister in the Office of the Vice President, Sylvia Chalikosa accompanied by DMMU National Coordinator Chanda Kabwe and other DMMU Officers, while the relief items for Zimbabwe will be officially handed over by Zambia’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Emmanuel Chenda in the company of DMMU Director for Disaster Risk Reduction Anderson Banda today (Wednesday),” she said.
“Government wishes to convey it’s gratitude to all who have come on board to support the noble cause and appeal to other well wishers to still come forward as the exercise is still on going.”
