NAQEZ welcomes plans to recruit teachers

• Plans by government to engage unemployed teachers welcome.
• Help in the reduction of the high pupil-teacher ratio in the country.
• Ministry of General Education says it will engage 10, 000 to 15, 000 unemployed teachers as part-timers.

National Action for Quality Education in Zambia NAQEZ says plans by government to engage 10, 000 to 15, 000 unemployed teachers will help reduce the high pupil-teacher ratio in the country.
Speaking in an interview with Money FM News, NAQEZ Executive Director Aaron Chansa says this move will benefit the education sector especially in rural areas where few teachers are usually attending to a large number of pupils.
“We welcome the move and support government on the need to engage more teachers to help reduce the high pupil-teacher ration especially in rural areas,” he said.
Mr Chansa adds that government should fulfil this plan and not abandon the project halfway because a lot of pupils will benefit from the development.
“We hope the Ministry will walk the talk and not just talk and then everything ends without progressive results,” he added.
“We need to see these teachers recruited as soon as possible so that they are sent mostly to rural areas where we have critical shortages of teachers,” he said.
Minister of General Education Dennis Wanchinga said it will engage 10, 000 to 15, 000 unemployed teachers as part-timers from the 60, 000 unemployed trainees on the market to reduce the country’s deficit which is about 47, 000.
